The Last VW Beetle was made 20 years ago in Puebla, a city in Mexico

On this day 20 years ago, July 30th, 2003, in Mexico, the last VW Beetle, also known as “Vocho,” was manufactured by Volkswagen at the plant located in the city of Puebla. This event took place 65 years after its initial launch. I didnt see anyone else covering this. 20 long years without a VW Beetle.

The VW Puebla factory produced millions of VW Beetles, the most common Mexican car.  The interior remained simple during its lifetime. Below is what the interior of a 2003 Mexican VW Beetle (Ultima Edicion) looked like

This final Vocho was nicknamed “El Rey” (The King) after the song by José Alfredo Jiménez, and it was immediately sent to the Volkswagen museum in Wolfsburg, Germany. In a true Mexican style, a mariachi band played “Las Golondrinas” to bid farewell to the iconic car.

The last VW Beetle made an official 92hp on its 1600cc engine. And sometimes I wish I could drive my ol’ man’s 1996 Beetle. One of the last cars he drove before passing away.
