Back in the very early 2000s, Mitsubishi still had a brilliant, but faltering, vehicle lineup to promote. A lot of their vehicles would get a new generation around those years so there was plenty of new vehicles to introduce to the market. The Lancer, Eclipse, Diamante and Pajero/Montero had just been updated and there were big growth plans that Mitsubishi had in mind in America and the rest of the world.
This was also the time of the infamous Mitsubishi aggressive financing promos in the USA. With 0 down, 0 payments for 3 months would put these cars in the hands of very young people, with little cash on hand, that would likely have trouble maintaining them properly. If that was the goal, mission accomplished. Definitely helped sales for sure but also made buying a used car from Mitsubishi a dicey proposition in the years that followed.
Looks like Mitsubishi also changed ad agencies during this time, and would use the same template of ads for nearly a decade. Good looking angles, cars in motion, fun people driving at night and great, fresh music. I can’t imagine licensing this music was cheap back then, but it did provide Mitsubishi some much needed attention, and also went ‘viral’ before social media via the infamous Chapelle parody of the Eclipse commercial. There was something from everyone, from Bon Jovi to Evanescence were featured. My personal favorite was the Mitsubishi Montero commercial, with Telepopmusik’s ‘Breathe’ and a couple across time.
But the music line up was pure late 90s/early 2000s. A whole other vibe back then when Mitsubishi called on the top songs of The Wiseguys, Dirty Vegas, Barenaked Ladies, Fatboy Slim, Bon Jovi and of course, Evanescence to help them sell their cars.
