Track Car WTF: 1978 Pontiac Sunfire

Here’s a choice coming from left field…or the field this was sitting at for 20 years. In 1978, the Sunfire was a typical American car of its time – big, heavy, and not very fuel efficient. It had a V8 engine, which meant you could go fast, but at the cost of gas mileage that would make a Saudi prince blush.

The interior was nothing to write home about either. The seats were uncomfortable, the dashboard was made of cheap plastic, and the radio was about as basic as they come. You’d be lucky to get AM and FM, let alone any kind of fancy satellite radio.

And let’s not forget about the handling. The Sunfire was like a big, lumbering beast. It handled like a tank, which is not exactly what you want in a car that you’re going to be driving on the street. You’d need to take wide turns, and the steering was so loose that you had to constantly correct it.

But you know what? Despite all of its flaws, there was something charming about the Sunfire. Maybe it was the fact that it was so unapologetically American. Or maybe it was just the nostalgia factor – a reminder of a time when cars were big, brash, and didn’t give a damn about the environment.

This 1978 Sunfire though has gone thru some mutations and grafted components. He lets us know that this car meant serious business with a “Full box tube chassis, 4 link, coils front/ rear, sway Bars, narrowed rear, turbo 400 with Gear Vendors OD, MUSTANG 2 with tube A arms. Rack manual steering. All new. No rust. All glass good. No hood. Fuel cell. Orig wiring” This one, rocking four steelies that dont even fit is asking $5000.  I would pass and run away, but you do you.
